Understanding tutoring: traditional vs. Psychological Based

Traditional Tutoring: Grades First

Psychological Based Tutoring: A Holistic Approach

Psychological Based Tutoring: A Holistic Approach

Traditional tutoring is a long-established method focused primarily on improving students' grades. The belief here is straight-forward: students struggle because they find the material difficult or confusing. Traditional tutors work to clarify these areas, often using repetitive practice and direct teaching methods.

Key Features of Traditional Tutoring.

  • Purpose: Solely improve grades.
  • Approach: Assumes lack of understanding is the main issue.
  • Assessment: Identifies specific academic weaknesses through test and exercises.
  • Focus: Concentrates on subject matter and academic performance.

While this method can be effective in raising grades, it often does not consider external factors that might be affecting a student's ability to learn and perform.

Psychological Based Tutoring: A Holistic Approach

Psychological Based Tutoring: A Holistic Approach

Psychological Based Tutoring: A Holistic Approach

In contrast, psychological based tutoring takes a more comprehensive approach by factoring in the student's mental health and overall well-being. This method recognizes that academic performance is influenced by a variety of factors, including emotional and psychological states.

Key Features of Psychological Based Tutoring:

  • Purpose: Promote increased self-awareness and insight into the impact of mental health on academic performance.
  • Approach: Understands that every student learns differently and tailors sessions individually.
  • Assessment: Conducts an initial assessment to gain insight into both academic and psychological challenges.
  • Focus: Values the student's overall emotional well-being and incorporates mental health resources.

Tutors in this approach are often pursuing degrees in mental health fields, although they are not therapists. They emphasize the importance of understanding the relationship between a student's thoughts, behaviors, and external factors with their academic performance.

Why Psychological Based Tutoring Stands Out

Psychological based tutoring offers a unique and beneficial approach by addressing the root causes of academic struggles. By fostering a supportive environment that considers mental health, students can develop better coping strategies, enhance self-awareness, and ultimately achieve sustained academic success.
